I put up this archive because it's sometimes neat to look at the evolution of one's computers over the years. Though most people will find it immensely boring, having no interest in my systems, a few may be intrigued. Who knows!
fullsized 04/25/2009 - Mac Pro "meerclar" and Macbook Pro "nala" sitting pretty. Not much has changed in the past two years or so. Wonder when I'll upgrade? Note the SATA dock; those things rock when you need to offline data onto cheap SATA drives. Yes, there is a severe case of external-driveitis going on here... |
fullsized 11/6/2006 - I had three heads on my mac Pro for a bit.. until the panel on the right died. |
fullsized 11/4/2006 - The ATI 1900XT card. Huge beefy cooler which exhausts outside the case. |
fullsized 11/4/2006 - Inside the Mac Pro. That's the boot disk; I moved it further back because it gets more airflow there. Notice a complete lack of cables, it just plugs into a SATA port backplane. You can also see the memory and one of the large fans. |
fullsized 11/4/2006 - The back of the Mac Pro. Two DVI cables go to the monitors; the vent above is so the 1900XT can exhaust its ridiculous heat output. You can see the USB adapter used to use the Model M keyboard on the Mac, along with the TOSlink optical cable going to the stereo system, and good ol' CAT5. |
fullsized 8/20/2006 - My new Mac Pro! It runs in a dual-head configuration and is one hell of a fast machine. I actually ran Quake 3 Arena and Second Life, one on each head, at the same time, and got decent framerates from both! Yes, that's my IBM Model M keyboard I'm using on there. It's the best keyboard ever constructed; a PS/2 to USB adapter and remapping of Caps Lock to Option is all it took to use it on the Mac. ClickeyClick! |
fullsized 7/24/2006 - Keeping it simple is impossible for me. On the left is the same Linux system from the previous image (hushpad), but joining the fray are my new Macbook Pro, nala (center) and its secondary display (right). You can also see the optical TOSlink cable plugging into the Macbook, as well as my Treo 650 smartphone next to the keyboard on the left. Yay for complexity! |
fullsized 1/1/2006 - Things have been simplified greatly. I'm down to one system (hushpad) and one monitor, and use my Powerbook as my secondary system. Hushpad is a Pentium 4 3.0GHz with 1GB of RAM and 160GB of local disk, plus some auxiliary external disk I use for backup and additional storage of non-critical data. Oh yeah, that grey thing in front of the keyboard is not part of the computer system. };) |
fullsized 7/18/2004 - Multihead Mayhem - Macintosh driving flat panel on the left, Linux box driving flat panel and CRT on the right. As much as I love flat panels, you can't beat a good ol' fashioned CRT for gaming. The extra Dell mouse is for a 486 that's not visible under the desk. |
fullsized The inside of the Apple IIe. Power supply is up top, expansion slots on the right side. Slot 6 contains a Disk ][ interface card, designed by the God Steve Wozniak himself. The CPU is the large chip directly to the left of the third slot from the top; it is a 6502. 64K of RAM is on the lower left side of the board, and the firmware (ROM) is the two equally sized chips directly to the right of the RAM. A 64K/80 column expansion card sits in the auxiliary slot just under the power supply and the whole shebang runs at a speedy 1MHz. |
fullsized This is my Apple IIe. I dug it out recently (some time in 2004) to play with it. I've had it for many, many years, and the Apple II was my first computer, way back in 1983! |
fullsized 2/29/2004 - View of the underside of the desk showing cable arrangements |
fullsized 2/13/2004 - Hushpad, primary linux server/workstation, and marsupilami, test machine that crashes periodically. Yes that's a Simba sticker on the front; sue me. (Knowing Eisner, he might!!) Hushpad = P3-600, 512MB RAM, about 95GB disk. Marsupilami = P3-450, 256MB RAM, 13GB disk. |
fullsized 1/25/2004 - The "computer desk". "Nala", Powerbook G4 on the left, "Hushpad", Linux box, on the right. Hushpad is in a closed cabinet and not visible here. The case under the desk on the left side is empty and just fills the space. |
fullsized 2003 - My Powerbook G4, "nala". This was my trusty machine for over three years until I upgraded nala to a Macbook Pro. |
fullsized 2004 - This is my "network rack". Okay, it's not much of a rack. Cisco 804 router on the left, Allied Telesyn FS708 switch on the right. (Note: As of June 2004, I no longer have ISDN; I have DSL. Click here for the story.) |
fullsized 6/15/1997 - "Milva" in 1997. It was a 486DX/66 with 24MB of RAM. What a beast. On the left edge you can see the modem I dialed up to the net with at the time. |
fullsized 4/5/1998 - My linux box in 1998, named "milva" at the time. Also on the left the Windows box named "Sarabi". Yeah, I ran Windows once. I'm glad those times are over. Milva was a 5x86/133 and Sarabi was a Pentium 166MHz |
fullsized 2/10/1999 - For a brief moment in 1999, I was playing with an Apple IIgs. Here it is in all its glory, along with the box of 5.25" disks I had from my old Apple II days, sitting there on the floor. I transferred tons of my old 5.25 disks to disk images to preserve them forever. That's an Apple Macintosh SE 30 just behind the disk boxes. |
fullsized Another pic of Hushpad circa 2001, with big case and weird SCSI CD-ROM drive. I believe it was a Pentium 166MHz back then. |
fullsized Hushpad on the inside back then. Too many loud noisy heat generating disks for a total of about 14GB! |
