The editing is a bit off in places (you can see a hand or two), but it's still funny and cute!

FreeBSD stabilitySubmitted by Zorin on Tue, 2004-12-21 15:19.I work with someone who really pushes BSD a lot. I mean, we're talking obsessed over it to the point of sometimes being annoying. Anyway, I have no problem with BSD, but imagine my amusement today when we tried to get dialout PPP working on FreeBSD for him and... ...the kernel panicked right as PPP tried to negotiate. I nearly lost it laughing right there! I've never had Linux pppd cause a kernel panic in my life! Of course, all is forgiven; it was probably just a lousy kernel on the LiveCD, but it was still amusing... P.S.: Isn't panicked an awkward word? panicked.. paniced.. no matter how you spell it, it just looks strange... »
What a great way to finish a weekend...Submitted by Zorin on Sun, 2004-12-19 20:52.So today I went to Sawgrass Recreational Park at around 2:30PM. Junior the Florida Panther was there; he's always fun to play with. He was so playful today that he was difficult to handle at times! You should see him, chasing a blue ball around and pushing it out of range of his restraint so someone has to go get it for him. It's really true; dogs have masters, cats have staff. }:) Leah was there, and decided to take some pictures of me using my camera. THANK YOU, Leah, if you are reading this, for the great pictures! They are posted on the site as usual; feel free to browse. I managed to get a really cool shot of Junior yawning with his tongue curled up, and also took some pictures of the chinchilla, Penelope the Skunk, and the rabbit. Unfortunately, the pictures of penelope don't have quite as much depth of field as I'd liked, but the lighting was tricky and she was moving around WAY too much to use a slow shutter speed. Apparently skunks do this really cool forepaw stomp thing when they're riled up; it was rather cute so I tried to get a good picture of it. All the pictures are posted at the VSW pictures site, feel free to browse and enjoy! Later I visited the property, and found that Shoshauna was still there. In fact, no other animals had left the facility! I'm expecting Shoshauna, Nikki, Diana, Darlene, and Nat to leave within the next couple of days; it will be a sad day for me as the facility they are going to is a 2.5 hour drive from home and I won't get to visit them very often. We fed the tigers ribs tonight. The nice thing about ribs is they're flat; you can shove the whole thing into the enclosure through a gap in the fence. I've found that it doesn't matter whether you can actually fit the meat through the feedholes; the tigers manage to make it fit once they grab ahold of it. Fun fun fun! No photography allowed!Submitted by Zorin on Sun, 2004-12-19 00:17.So, I was browsing the merchandise in the Otakucon '04 dealer room, and saw this booth selling cool T-shirts. Of course, there was a "No photography" sign there, so I had to take a picture. The funny thing is, I wouldn't have taken the picture if that sign wasn't there! I had to rebel against the silly paranoid booth operator who thought I could somehow damage his business by taking a photo of some T-shirts. Oh well, here it is in all its glory. NO PHOTOGRAPHY! THAT MEANS YOU!!! »
Just got back from OtakuCon '04Submitted by Zorin on Sat, 2004-12-18 23:56.Holy crap. This has got to be the most mismanaged, crazy con I've ever been to. Two panels we went to were completely non-existant, with no signs telling anyone it was cancelled. The Anime Music Video contest started and ended around 40 minutes later than it was supposed to, and the Cosplay contest started 45 minutes late. The people running the shows were amateurish and the lighting on the stage for the cosplay event was horrid. I guess the dealer room was a nice experience, if a bit overpriced. The one thing I really wanted to buy, a production cel of Kiki and Jiji from "Kiki's Delivery Service", was $2500! Absolutely insane. I guess they're hoping some rich fan of the movie comes along and plunks down the cash. There was very little stuff from the animes I am/was into, like Tenchi Muyo, Sailor Moon, stuff from Studio Ghibli, etc... Mostly the new stuff. I didn't really participate in any of the gaming events, so I'm not sure how well run they were. Hopefully they weren't too bad. Overall, though, it was a fun day. I took a few pictures, some of which will be posted here. }:) Pictures are linked here. -Z To Infinity...and Beyond!Submitted by Zorin on Fri, 2004-12-17 22:43.From Usenet... Hee. Gargoyles Season One DVD SetSubmitted by Zorin on Fri, 2004-12-17 18:53.So, I recently picked up the Gargoyles season one DVD set. For those who don't know, Gargoyles was an unusual TV series produced by Disney in 1994. It starred this race of Gargoyles that were stone by day, and alive by night. What seperated this series from typical TV animation is that there was a very strong storyline, with continuity and good character development, along with a great voice cast and higher-than-normal animation quality. This is what American animation could be, if it weren't so incredibly kid-centric or comedy-centric. I had forgotten about the show, for the most part, since it hasn't been on TV for about 8 years or more, except on Toon Disney, which I don't get. So of course, hearing about this DVD was a pleasant surprise. I purchased it on release day and sat down to watch it, and was amazed all over again. The DVD has the first 13 episodes. Gargoyles had a small first season, designed for weekly syndication. As the show grew in popularity, it got a full fledged daily-syndication second season, with over 50 episodes. But this was the experiment, and it was a great success. There was this great segment on The Gathering, a convention for Gargoyles fans. I've been to several science fiction and furry conventions, and this was very similar. Just a bunch of people who really love something, getting together. Some of the costumes are pretty neat, too. The transfer quality on the DVD is excellent, both video and audio. Being able to watch this show again after all this time was a treat, and I hope everyone who remembers it will pick up this DVD and enjoy it once again. Now to wait for season 2... Damn security holes...Submitted by Zorin on Fri, 2004-12-17 10:08.Everyone's always whining about Windows being insecure.. But us Linux users have to keep on top of things as well... A new security hole has been found in Samba, that nice program that lets Windows machines mount directories on Linux servers. Waitasec... This security problem is in something related to Windows! Big surprise there! Anyway, here it is. »
The l33test mug in the worldSubmitted by Zorin on Thu, 2004-12-16 23:13.This mug rocks. I've had it for nearly twenty years! Notice the 5.25" floppies and the fan-fold computer paper. Doesn't nostalgia simply rock? }:) »
Holy Freakin' LordSubmitted by Zorin on Thu, 2004-12-16 22:34.Okay, I'm a guy, and I like women who are well proportioned. This, however, is ridiculous: (not safe to click on at work) Her implants weigh 4.5 pounds EACH!! How much do you want to bet she'll be having those implants removed or reduced before she's 40? Alright, perhaps there are guys who are turned on by this... But jeez... Enough is enough! -Z »
